Cold and Pain in Catalonia (Montsec Bikepacking Loop)
Cycling the world - Europe: 140 episode
Journey with me through the raw elements of Catalonia in this first episode of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop. Starting in the quaint village of ...Ponts, near Barcelona, I face the harsh realities of winter bikepacking - the biting cold, the enveloping fog, and the unrelenting pain. Witness how I navigate through these challenges, from seeking refuge in an old farmhouse to combat the chilly nights, to dealing with the unexpected agony of a stiff saddle and a throbbing Achilles heel. Despite the adversities, the stunning landscapes of Catalonia provide a backdrop that makes every pedal stroke worth the struggle. This isn't just a bike ride; it's a battle against the elements and a true test of resilience and determination.

Cycling the world - Europe: 142 episode
In the captivating third episode of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop in Catalonia, awaken with me to a breathtaking sunrise, where the sky ignites with ...vibrant colors, setting the stage for a blissful yet chilly morning ride. The journey takes an unexpected turn before lunch when the spring in my disc brake pads implodes, challenging me with a timely repair after dismantling the entire brake system. Undeterred, I traverse the stunning Montsec mountains, moving from dirt road to dirt road, trail to trail, immersing myself in the beauty of this rugged terrain. As night falls, I arrive in the enchanting village of Anger, cloaked in darkness but just in time to stock up on provisions. Utilizing the cover of night, I scout the outskirts for the perfect spot to stealth camp, ready to rest before another day of adventure.

Cycling the world - Europe: 143 episode
In the fourth instalment of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop through Catalonia, Spain, join me as I wake up in Ager, nestled in the small ...porch of the village church, shielded from wind and rain. Despite a forecast promising no rain, the morning greets me with steady showers. After a hopeful hour's wait, I decide to face the elements head-on, mindful of the short winter days. The rain intermittently accompanies me to the peak's summit, where a dark and gloomy day obscures the surrounding views with a veil of clouds and mist. My descent into a new valley brings clearer skies and a brighter mood by lunch, with the sun breaking through. The journey continues across a spectacular dam into another valley, and as sunset nears, my search for a dry spot to camp proves fruitless. Darkness finds me atop a small hill, by a church and an unexpected open hut, where I light the fireplace to warm the room and pitch my tent for the night.

Cycling the world - Europe: 144 episode
Embark on a captivating journey through Catalonia's Montsec Bikepacking Loop in this fifth episode, where adventure unfolds under the Spanish sun. Departing from the ...village of Benabarre after being stranded by heavy rains, I set off into a day that promises the chill of early winter with the sun high but temperatures heading below freezing by nightfall. The trail outside the village, shrouded in woods, offers a blend of beauty and challenge, with muddy paths and the unexpected thrill of nearby hunting operations targeting wild boars. Each dirt road leads me from one vibrant valley to another, showcasing the colorful woods in their early winter attire. As the afternoon progresses into a lengthy climb towards sunset, the effort keeps me warm against the cold, even as I experience a minor setback with my drone. Amidst the ascension, a mesmerizing dance of probably Griffons above heralds the expansive views of snow-covered Pyrenees in the distance. The day's ride, though marred by the sight of a hunting party's catch, closes with a breathtaking orange sunset that blankets the sky, woods, and road, marking another remarkable day on the loop.

Cycling the world - Europe: 145 episode
In this sixth episode of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop in Catalonia, experience the trials and triumphs of a bikepacker's journey through the unexpected. After ...enduring a freezing night under the shelter of an empty farmhouse's roof, my sleep was frequently interrupted by a curious wild boar. With the break of dawn, the sun brought a slight reprieve from the cold, but the real challenge lay ahead. The trail, transformed into a mud trap by the heavy rains, forced me to push my bike through the muck, unable to pedal as the mud ensnared my drive train and tires. The ordeal of pushing my bike uphill, battling for grip with every step, turned into an exhausting nightmare. Covering less than a kilometre took hours, leading me to opt for a paved road detour to a nearby village. There, I took a much-needed rest, savoured my lunch, and cleaned my bike, preparing for the upcoming ascent. Reaching the summit just in time for sunset, I found solace and companionship in a small hamlet, where I spent the evening engaged in warm conversations, enjoying hot tea, and sharing dinner with the locals. Join me on this segment of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop for a tale of perseverance, unexpected challenges, and the simple joys of camaraderie on the road.

Cycling the world - Europe: 146 episode
This is seventh episode of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop in Catalonia, where unexpected kindness and nature's challenges blend into an unforgettable journey. The night ...before, in the quaint hamlet of Castellnou de Montsec, home to just one permanent resident, I encountered two brothers with a passion for cycling. Their offer of hot tea blossomed into dinner and a warm invitation to sleep indoors, a gesture of hospitality that extended our conversations well past breakfast as snow began to fall outside. Setting out later than anticipated, I faced the first hour of travel under a snowfall that soon gave way to clearing skies. The day's journey involved a strenuous climb amidst cold wind and fog, followed by a lengthy descent to a water reservoir. The path challenged me with frequent mud traps, leading to an arrival at the shore by sunset, far later than expected. With darkness encroaching and no viable camping spots due to wet and muddy fields, I pressed on to a village where I finally found refuge for the night.

Cycling the world - Europe: 147 episode
Embark on the eighth episode of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop in Catalonia, Spain, where each day unfolds with new challenges and heartwarming encounters. Waking ...up under the roof of the polideportivo in Guardia de Noguera, I enjoyed a peaceful night in my tent, shielded from the humidity. As I pack up camp and prepare breakfast, a thick layer of fog envelops the valley, setting a mystical scene for the morning. The day's journey begins with a climb out of the fog, revealing clear skies as I descend back into the valley and through the village of Tramp. Faced with the day's final ascent, I find it to be much longer and steeper than anticipated. Reaching the summit at sunset, I descend into the village below, searching for a spot to pitch my tent. However, the few welcoming inhabitants offer me the use of a community room for celebrations to spend the night warm, dry, and even equipped with a small bathroom. A delightful surprise comes from a Dutch couple living in the village, owners of the Sauvella winery and wine bar, who bring me snacks and a bottle of their wine, adding a perfect touch to my dinner. The winery, Sauvella, offers tastings in their village wine bar ( https://www.sauvella.com/ ), introducing me to the local flavours and the generosity of the community.

Cycling the world - Europe: 148 episode
Dive into the ninth episode of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop in Catalonia, Spain, where adventure and the unexpected are part of the journey. Leaving ...the village of Ocau after a cosy night in a community room, I was immediately enveloped by a thick fog that covered the valley, bringing a cold and humid morning. Despite the challenging weather, the trails of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop remained a joy to ride, showcasing the beauty of the route from valley to valley and hamlet to hamlet. On a side of Montsec that turns into a winter haven for rock climbers, I found myself cycling into the sunset as the day's light faded, embarking on a long climb into the dark, moonless night. Pushing almost to the top, I found a perfect spot to camp. Exhausted, too late, and too cold to cook, I settled for a few cookies and some lukewarm tea from my bottle, marking the end of another remarkable day on the loop.

Cycling the world - Europe: 149 episode
The tenth and final episode of the Montsec Bikepacking Loop in Catalonia, Spain, as I conclude my unforgettable journey through this magnificent landscape. Awakening ...on the majestic mountains of Montsec, high above the cloud of humidity, the night was cold but the wind and altitude, along with a bit of thermal inversion, kept me dry. The descent into the valley was exhilarating, with breathtaking views that made the dropping temperatures worthwhile. The day progressed smoothly, traversing from valley to valley on splendid trails. As my adventure neared its end, I was welcomed for the night by a delightful couple who are warmshowers hosts, living in a home that's part of an ancient monastery. Spending the night there, sharing dinner with locals, and indulging in a hot shower was the perfect culmination of my Montsec Bikepacking journey.
